Following the death of Larry King on Saturday, tributes to the legendary broadcaster and old interview clips began flooding social media — especially one particularly awkward segment between King and comedian Jerry Seinfeld.
In the clip from 2007, King is discussing the cancellation of “Seinfeld” after nine seasons.
“You gave it up, right?” King asks Seinfeld. “They didn’t cancel you; you canceled them.”
Seinfeld takes a pause and appears to be taken aback before giving his response.
“You’re not aware of this? You think I got canceled?” he says. “I thought that was pretty well documented.”
Seinfeld’s voice rises as he continues to talk: “I was the No. 1 show on television, Larry. Do you know who I am? ... It’s a big difference between being canceled and being No. 1.”
During the segment, both King and Seinfeld take digs at each other, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“Have I hurt you, Jerry?” King says. ... “Don’t most shows go down a little?”
“Most people do also,” Seinfeld retorts, later asking for someone to get King his resume to review.
Since that interview first aired, people have debated whether Seinfeld was actually upset or joking with King. According to HuffPost, the clip has gone viral before, showing up online with headlines like “Jerry Seinfeld Rips Larry King” and getting referenced in the news over the years.
The comedian set the record straight Saturday following King’s death at the age of 87.
“Always loved Larry King and will miss him,” he wrote on Twitter. “The ‘canceled’ bit was just me having fun with his little mistake. Nothing more. Or less.”
